It was on this day in 1866 that the Royal Aeronautical Society was formed in London. It is now a leading authority and learned society for the aeronautical industry. In 1970 the Boeing 747 made its maiden flight, and in 2001 Bill Hewlett, the co-founder of Hewlett Packard died in Palo Alto, California at the age of 87.
